What is Qommunity?
by Ashley LaRue
It feels weird to reintroduce Qommunity because honestly, we’ve been here. And by we, I mean me, Ashley, and my presence in some of your favorite people’s orbit. After years of trying to figure out what Qommunity actually is and does - I don’t know… there’s a part of me that just wants to dumb it down.
What does Qommunity do? We connect really cool, talented and creative people to other cool, talented and creative people. We create the space for those connections to happen, in a variety of ways. And again, by we, I mean me - but also the folx I’ve had the pleasure of supporting along the way.
What does Qommunity do? Fangirl. Local performers, artists, businesses… we cape. We support. We let you borrow our PA system. We help you book a venue. We cover your supplies for a party. We make space for you to meet people with shared interests, values, morals? Hopefully. We want you to have fun. We want you to craft so you get a cute dose of dopamine and don’t overwhelm your body with stress like genuinely, some of y’all are miserable because you don’t craft.
Anywhom, yes to all of these things but probably most importantly - we do this for the most marginalized of us. Like, hello people of color, hello queer people, hello people with disabilities. And in my little corner of the universe, that doesn’t need to be said, but I’m saying it so it’s clear.
And we want to do more.
More opportunities for Black queer folx to connect, create, and experience new things together. More spaces where we can see ourselves, find our people, and feel like we belong. More ways to bring good ideas to life and make something meaningful happen.
Because community can look like a lot of things… A chance to make something. A shared meal. A dance floor. A room full of strangers who don’t feel like strangers for long. Join us.
We’re definitely not a cult.
